DK 2019 70053 A1 1MAGNETIC BICYCLE LIGHT WITH EASY ADJUSTMENT
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the field of bicycle lights, especially to the field of magnetically powered bicycle lights. More specifically, the invention provides a magnetic bicycle light for easy adjustment of distance to a magnet fixed to a spoke of the bicycle wheel.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In the bicycle industry, there is a large after sale market for lights arranged to function without the need to replace batteries. Magnetic lights capturing energy by a magnet mounted on a spoke of the bicycle wheel are popular. Still, it is a key feature of such magnetic lights to be easy for the consumer to mount on the bicycle without the need for professional help for proper function and reliable fixation. For a reliable magnetic energy capturing, such magnetic light need to be rather precisely mounted and adjusted sidewise, so as to be close to the wheel mounted magnet but without the magnet touching housing of the light when passing. Such mounting of a magnetic light can be challenging for the unskilled user.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved magnetic bicycle light which can be easily mounted and adjusted by an unskilled user. In a first aspect, the invention provides a bicycle light device arranged for attachment to a hub of a bicycle, the bicycle light device comprising: - a housing having a sliding arrangement and being arranged for housing all of: - a light source, and - an electricgenerator for generating electric energy upon passage of a magnet, and being connected to provide electric energy to power the light source, and
DK 2019 70053 A1 2 - a bracket with a first end arranged for fixation to the hub of the bicycle, and with a second end being arranged for engagement with the sliding arrangement of the housing, so as to allow the housing to slide in a horizontal direction relative to the bracket, an eccentric element is rotatably mounted to the bracket so as to allow the eccentric element to engage with the sliding arrangement of the housing to lock horizontal position of the housing relative to the bracket in a first angular position of the eccentric element, and so as to allow the housing to slide in a horizontal direction relative to the bracket in a second angular position of the eccentric element, and wherein the eccentric element is accessible for turning between the first and second angular position by a user when the bicycle light device is mounted on the hub of the bicycle, so as to allow the user to adjust horizontal position of the housing.
Such magnetic bicycle light is easy to adjust, when fixed to the bracket, since tightening within a quarter of a full rotation is enough to tighten the eccentric. This can be done by one hand, while guiding the sidewise position of the housing with the opposite hand. Thus, such adjustment operation can easily be performed by an unskilled user.
The bracket is suitable for attaching a vehicle accessory to a vehicle, which is to be understood as the attaching device being designed to be attached to a specific part of a specific vehicle, e.g. a fork of a bicycle.
In the context of the present invention, “horizontal” is to be understood as a direction which has a major component parallel to the rotational axis of the wheel, i.e. irrespective of whether the bicycle is standing upright or lying down on its side. Thus, with this direction definition of “horizontal”, it is the purpose that the housing can be moved closer to or longer from a magnet mounted on the spoke of the wheel.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element is an eccentric bolt in which the head has a protruding element suitable for interlocking with a toothed surface.
DK 2019 70053 A1 3 In the context of the present invention, an eccentric bolt is to be understood as either a bolt with an off-centre pivot point or a bolt with a non-round head. When an eccentric bolt is rotated around its longitudinal/centre, axis, by either tightening or loosening said bolt, the head of the bolt extends further in one direction than in another direction, e.g. so as to apply pressure to a surface adjacent to said head when the eccentric bolt is tightened or relieve pressure from between the eccentric bolt and the surface when loosening said bolt. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element can be turned between the first and second angular positions within an angular turning of less than 180°, such as less than 120°, such as less than 90°, such as less than 70° or such as less than 50°. In an embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element is arranged to receive a tool to facilitate turning the eccentric element between the first and second angular positions so as to clearly indicate to a user whether the eccentric element is in a first or second position. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element has an indentation, such as a notch, arranged to receive said tool, such as an Umbraco/Allen key or such as a flat-head/phillips/torx screwdriver. In another embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element has a protrusion, arranged to receive said tool, such as an adjustable wrench, such as a socket wrench or such as a spanner. In an embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element is arranged to rotate around an axis being perpendicular to an axis between the first and second ends of the bracket.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric element is accessible for turning by the user from one side of the bracket being opposite a side of the bracket facing the wheel of the bicycle, when mounted on the bicycle hub so, so as to provide easy access to the eccentric element relative to the user.
DK 2019 70053 A1 4 In an embodiment of the present invention, the bracket comprises a flat metal element with one end arranged for fixation to the hub of the bicycle, and wherein the eccentric element is mounted on one side of the flat metal element.
Ina preferred embodiment of the present invention, the bracket comprises an additional element, such as a polymeric element, attached to the flat metal element, wherein the additional element forms the second end of the bracket and shaped to receive a bar attached to the housing, so as to fix the housing relative to the bracket except for the horizontal direction.
In an advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the bar of the housing and the outer periphery of the eccentric element have toothed surfaces, so as to allow the eccentric element to provide a friction against the bar for effectively lock horizontal position of the housing relative to the bracket in the first angular position of the eccentric element. In a further preferred embodiment, the eccentric element is a metallic element, and preferably the housing and the sliding arrangement is formed by a polymer.
In another embodiment, the housing can be adjusted horizontally, relative to the bracket from a substantially centred position within 1-50 mm, within such as 2-20 mm, or within such as 5-15 mm. An advantage relating to this aspect of the present invention may be that the attaching device and the vehicle accessory, such as a bicycle light, may be provided as an integrated system, where the user is provided with a kit with all parts required for installing e.g. a bicycle light on a bicycle. I.e. a kit comprising all of: the bicycle light device as well as a magnet arranged to be mounted on a spoke of the bicycle wheel, e.g. the kit may include a tool dedicated to operate the eccentric element. In a second aspect the invention provides a method for adjusting horizontal position of a bicycle light powered by an electric generator, the method comprising:
DK 2019 70053 A1 - providing a bicycle light device according to the first aspect, mounted on the hub of an associated bicycle, - rotating the eccentric element so as to allow sliding of the housing relative to the bracket, 5 - adjusting the horizontal position of the housing so as to optimize the distance between the electric generator within said housing relative to the magnet, and - rotating the eccentric element so as to lock the horizontal position of the housing relative to the bracket.
Especially, the person performing the method may use one hand to hold the housing, and the opposite hand to rotate the eccentric element to lock/unlock the horizontal sliding.
It is to be understood that embodiments and features of the first and second aspects of the present invention may be combined. These and other aspects of the invention will be apparent from and elucidated with reference to the embodiments described hereinafter.
